It just cannot send it to anyone else.
Built in notification rules email you, when a cell changes, with no conditions attached. That is not a reminder system. This is the difference.

How it works
Three choices and you are done
Everything happens in a sidebar inside the spreadsheet you already have. Nothing to install on your computer, no account to create anywhere else.
Point at your columns
Pick the tab, the column that holds the date, how many days ahead to send, and the column that holds the email address. Any layout works, because you are the one pointing.
Save the rule
Sheet Alerts reads only the columns you picked, in the one spreadsheet you opened it in. It cannot see any other file you own.
Close the file
From then on it checks your sheet every hour, and the sending happens on our server. A log tab in your sheet records every message that went out, so you can prove it happened.

Every hour, on our server. Not when you open the file, not when your laptop happens to be awake. This is where most reminder add-ons quietly fail.
Reads the row, not just the date
The recipient comes from a column, so every row can go to a different person. Or set one fixed address if everything lands on the same desk.
Skips what is handled
Name a status column and any row marked done is left alone. No chasing people about something they already dealt with last week.
A log tab you can audit
Every send is written into your own spreadsheet with a timestamp and the recipient. Nothing goes out twice, and you can show someone exactly what happened.
Your own wording
Write the subject and the message yourself, or leave the sensible default. The date, the row label and the tab name drop into place automatically.
Narrow permissions on purpose
The add-on asks for access to the current spreadsheet only. Not your Drive, not your Gmail. Google confirms it needs no sensitive permissions at all.

We never touch your Gmail
Reminders leave from our own server, not from your account. That matters twice over: your mailbox stays private, and a reminder does not sit in your Sent folder pretending you wrote it.
Your rules and scheduled reminders are stored in the European Union. The email itself is delivered by Resend, which is based in the United States, so a recipient address leaves the EU at the moment we send. That is spelled out in the privacy policy, not buried in it.

Does it really work when the spreadsheet is closed?
Yes. The add-on schedules an hourly check with Google, and the sending happens on our server. Nothing depends on the file being open or on your computer being on. This is the single most common complaint about reminder add-ons, and it is the reason this one exists.
Do I need to write a formula or a script?
No. You choose your tab and your columns from dropdown menus in a sidebar. If you can fill in a form, you can set this up.
Can it send to a different person on every row?
Yes. Point at a column that holds email addresses and each row goes to whoever is listed on it. If everything should land on one desk instead, you can set a single fixed address.
Will it email people about rows we already handled?
Not if you name a status column. Any row marked done is skipped. Every send is also written to a log tab, and nothing is ever sent twice for the same row.
What if my date comes from a formula?
That works. We do not watch for edits. We read the date column fresh on every hourly
check, so a date produced by a formula, pulled in by IMPORTRANGE, or typed by
hand all look the same to us.
One thing does matter: the cell has to hold a real date, not text that looks like one. If a formula hands back a string, or if Sheets read your typing as text, we skip that row. You can tell them apart at a glance, because a real date sits on the right of the cell and text sits on the left.
What are the limits?
Two worth knowing before you install.
It is not a mailing list tool. Reminders go to people who already know you. The terms are strict about that, because one bad sender puts everyone else's mail in the spam folder.
We do not guarantee delivery. What we do instead: every send is written to the log tab with a timestamp, and the check runs again the next hour. A reminder that already went out for a row is not repeated on the next run. Where a missed reminder would be expensive, keep a second check that does not depend on us. What happens if you stop running this?
We give at least 60 days' notice, so you have time to move. Your rules and your log live in your own spreadsheet, so the record of what was sent stays with you either way. That promise is in the terms, section 8, not just here.
